An earthquake registering 6.5 occurred September 22, 2003 between Sosua and Puerto Plata at a depth of about 6 miles. Considerable damage resulted, luckily there were few deaths as the earthquake occured late on a Sunday night.

In the hills of el Choco 300 feet up and two miles inland overlooking the north Atlantic Ocean between Sosua and Cabarete.
